Technology to Enable Large-Scale Visual Screening
A research team with experience in optometry has developed a solution to detect visual anomalies in a fast and scalable way.
Challenge
To transform a university-born technology into a viable, scalable product validated for visual screening in proximity-based channels such as pharmacies and optical shops. The challenge included ensuring ease of use, maintaining scientific rigor, securing regulatory compliance, and designing a business model adapted to the market—without compromising clinical credibility or user experience.
Solution
An affordable MVP was defined, tailored for use in pharmacies and optical shops, targeting segments with the highest adoption potential. Regulatory fit was analyzed, and technology transfer formats such as licensing or spin-off creation were explored. At the same time, innovative pharmacies were selected for pilot testing, key distributor contacts were established, and input from primary care clinicians was collected.
Result
The combination of technical and strategic work led to a viable roadmap for bringing the product to market. Validation scenarios, priority channels, and key partnerships for technology transfer were identified. The project is now moving toward implementation in real-world environments with high impact potential. Developing the project through a mentorship format was key to empowering the core team and extracting deep, applicable insights.

“The combination of technical and strategic work led to a viable roadmap.”
