Hydrogen Generation through Microwave-Induced Plasma Pyrolysis
Explore the Future of Hydrogen Production Using New Methods
Challenge
A group of researchers approached Arvor to explore cleaner ways to produce hydrogen. They requested a study comparing traditional methods, such as steam reforming, which is the most common and cost-effective but highly polluting, with more sustainable alternatives. Among these, we evaluated turquoise hydrogen, generated through the pyrolysis of methane, which has a lower environmental impact. The goal was to identify how these emerging technologies can help create a more eco-friendly hydrogen production process that relies less on fossil fuels.
Solution
At Arvor, we conducted an analysis focused on hydrogen production through microwave-induced plasma pyrolysis, with a particular emphasis on using hydrocarbons, specifically methane as the most common source. We also examined the potential of less-studied sources, such as hydrocarbons dissolved in industrial wastewater. This study concluded that while water pyrolysis is less efficient, methane yields better results in both hydrogen generation and the production of carbon black, a valuable byproduct. This evaluation enabled us to explore alternative pathways for viable development.
Result
Thanks to the analysis, we have developed a solid value proposition that highlights the implementation of this technology to significantly reduce pollutant emissions in hydrogen production. Focused on utilizing hydrocarbons more sustainably, the proposal emphasizes economic and efficiency benefits for advancing towards a cleaner energy future. Additionally, the generation of carbon black as a byproduct creates opportunities for various industrial applications, promoting a circular economy. Finally, alternative applications were presented to strengthen a business plan that can attract the interest of future investors.
