Evaluates a new way of detecting mycotoxin contamination
Assesses industrialization and market for mycotoxin control in cereals
Challenge
A university has developed a method to measure the amount of mycotoxins present in batches of cereals that are about to be processed using an infra-red light technique.
The cost of the necessary equipment needs to be assessed, as well as its industrial design and the associated market in Catalonia.
Solution
The mycotoxin problem, types of mycotoxins and the crops they affect were assessed in detail.
Cereal processors were interviewed and shared their visions, which types of mycotoxins they would use, and where it would make sense to apply the technology in the value chain.
The industrial design was worked out with an engineering company, and the costs were evaluated.
Result
- Some of the partners interviewed offered to pilot a proof of concept of the industrialisation of the solution.
- Some mycotoxins were discarded, and efforts were made to focus on the most relevant mycotoxins.
“Some mycotoxins were discarded, and efforts were focused on the most relevant mycotoxins”.
